The excellent genii at musicblog Destination:OUT have made a bleeding awesome (long, somewhat vitriolic but crazy well-written) post about Jazz history and Wynton Marsalis's controversial conservatism within that spectrum -- for better or worse. I'd venture a guess that most of the kind folks who read my happy little blog don't care too much for Jazz, and I've always felt that's totally understandable, tastes differing as they do, but especially considering lack of widespread exposure of pieces like the one hotlinked above. I strongly encourage giving it a listen. It may even rock your face off. BEWARE!!
